Calvin Tu
He is a 10th grade student from Shanghai American School. He is interested to work on a political science related research.


Calvin is a particularly outstanding student in social studies and debate. He has done very well in tournaments in the National Speech & Debate Association, and the National HS Debate League of China. He is also an active participant in Model United Nations at his school.

Learning objectives

  • Calvin’s interest was to research the subject of the the Republic of China, or Taiwan, and its tense relationship with the People’s Republic of China, which regards Taiwan as a breakaway province of China. This also included an examination of the role of the United States and its policy of defending Taiwan from Chinese aggression.
  • The goal of the tutorial was the completion of an original research paper. The educational objective was to help lead Calvin to synthesize his research into a clear and well-documented paper.


What challenges did he face?

  • As Calvin was preparing successive drafts of his work, sometimes he has difficulty expressing his writings. It is his second language however, and he overcame this problem.


How did our program help him?

  • The mentorship program helped lead Calvin to synthesize his research into a clear and well-documented paper.
  • Calvin learnt about a lot about research writing, from formulating research questions to writing methodologies and citations.


Matched Professor

The mentor is currently a lecturer in law at Columbia University. He has taught Criminal Law, Civil Procedure, Evidence, Criminal Procedure, and Professional Responsibility at Columbia, Rutgers, and Fordham Law Schools.

I liked working with Calvin. He has a bright future ahead of him. He is a very bright and ambitious student. I liked his intelligence and willingness to work hard on this project even amid his multiple other obligations.
