Yale Summer Session for Pre-College Students

ISSOS at Yale

ISSOS offers a unique and immersive summer school experience, blending academics, creative enrichment, and adventure in the prestigious university settings of St Andrews, Cambridge, and Yale. As part of Yale Summer Programs for High School Students, ISSOS provides a three-week program where students choose one academic course and one elective, striking a balance between intellectual challenge and personal development.

Academic courses range from Debate, Business & Entrepreneurship, and Youth Leadership to Creative Writing, Journalism, and Study Skills. Meanwhile, electives such as Tennis, Golf, Theatre, Film, Art, and Outdoor Leadership allow students to explore their passions beyond the classroom. In addition to coursework, ISSOS organizes cultural excursions, evening events, and engaging activities that encourage international friendships and personal growth. To create a truly global learning environment, the program limits enrollment to just 10% of students from any single nationality, ensuring a diverse and enriching experience for all participants.

Yale Summer Debate Program (YSDP)

As part of Yale Summer Programs for High School Students, the Yale Summer Debate Program (YSDP) provides an immersive experience for students interested in parliamentary debate. While the program primarily serves students from New Haven and surrounding areas, it has also welcomed participants from across the country and internationally. YSDP focuses on the world’s most widely practiced debate format, which is also used in prestigious Connecticut tournaments like the Yale Invitational and Yale Osterweis.

The program caters to all experience levels, from beginners to advanced debaters, offering tailored instruction to meet diverse needs. Participants benefit from a low instructor-to-student ratio, ensuring personalized coaching from Yale debaters and experienced Urban Debate League coaches. Throughout the week, students engage in small-group sessions, practice debates, and daily electives that explore various subjects and skills.

Citizens Thinkers Writers

Yale’s Citizens Thinkers Writers offers participants an opportunity to delve into fundamental moral and political questions within a collegiate environment. The program allows students to engage in small seminars led by Yale professors, focusing on close reading, analytical writing, and college-level discussions. This immersive experience encourages students to connect classical philosophical conversations, dating back to ancient Greece and Rome, to contemporary issues of justice relevant to their lives in New Haven.

Following the summer intensive, participants become CTW Fellows and continue to engage with the program throughout the academic year. Additionally, students receive mentorship and support in the college application process, including one-on-one assistance with college essays from undergraduate Residential Teaching Assistants and optional pairing with mentors from New Haven Reach, an undergraduate organization at Yale.

Pathways Summer Scholars

The Pathways to Science Summer Scholars Program is a free, two-week STEM initiative hosted by Yale University for 100 high school students from New Haven, West Haven, and Orange public schools. Participants engage in hands-on workshops covering topics such as chemistry, neuroscience, and engineering, all collaboratively designed and taught by Yale faculty and graduate students.

Rising seniors have the opportunity to reside in Yale dormitories, gaining exposure to college life and participating in college preparatory activities alongside their STEM coursework. The program emphasizes discovery, critical thinking, and problem-solving, aiming to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Eligibility: rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders from New Haven, West Haven, and Orange public schools. Students must already be enrolled in Yale Pathways to Science program.
