She is an 11th grade student from Haddonfield Memorial High School. She is interested to pursue a research related to history and films.


Alice is a humanities-oriented student. Her main interests are Film and History. She is currently taking AP US History and she is currently writing a report on horror films for her AP Research course.

Learning objectives

  • The objective is to write a paper on how Civil Rights movement was depicted in American films during the half century beginning in the late sixties of the last century and ending during the first decade of the current century.


What challenges did she face?

  • Alice had to delve into two different academic discourses, history and Cinema Studies. Both fields are extremely broad and contain lots of information to digest.


How did our program help her?

  • Alice was able to write a research paper based on her interest in History and Film, which is something her school does not emphasize on.
  • Through the mentorship program, she received a stellar recommendation letter.


Matched mentor

The mentor is a professor in History at Caltech. His main research interest is History in the Visual Media and Biography narrative. He is the Founding Editor of “Rethinking History: The Journal of Theory and Practice” and the Board Member of “New Academia Publishing”. He is the author of several books, such as “History on Film / Film on History” published in 2006.

Alice is brilliant both on a verbal and a written level. She is also good-natured, hard-working, and self-critical, the latter being important for an intellectual enterprise
