Atharva Sengupta
He is an 11th grade student from Ridge High School. He is interested to work on a project related to liberalism.


Atharva’s primary academic interests are Sociology, Philosophy and Political Theory. He took a course at Brown last summer on Race, Justice and American Democracy and is also a member of his school’s Ethics Club. Outside of academia, Atharva enjoys sports.

Learning objectives

  • The goals of the program are to build analytic, research, and writing skills in the social sciences.
  • By the end of the eight sessions, the student will have completed a lengthy research paper that investigates a particular social topic of interest or concern to the student.
  • The session time is spent on the following steps and processes: getting to know the student and identifying areas of interest, developing and designing a research question, conducting a literature review, researching and finding relevant sources on the topic, reading and discussing studies and literature, outlining a research paper, and writing a research paper.


What challenges did he face?

  • Atharva took on a challenging topic as liberalism within philosophy can be very lofty and ambitious. He had difficulties structuring the organization of his paper.


How did our program help him?

  • Atharva gained knowledge on the following topics: identifying areas of interest, developing and designing a research question, conducting a literature review, researching and finding relevant sources on the topic, reading and discussing studies and literature, outlining a research paper, and writing a research paper.
  • Under his mentor’s guidance, Atharva’s final research paper got accepted for publication in the Curieux Journal.


Matched mentor

The mentor is a lecturer in Urban Studies and Sociology at University of Pennsylvania, where he teaches Urban Health and Criminal Justice. He is passionate in the research areas of health, criminal justice, gender, social psychology, and the military.

Atharva absolutely met my expectations. He was humble and studious. He has an appealing balance of confidence and humility, both of which will serve him very well in college and in life more broadly.
