Musicology

Claire Chang
She is an 11th grade student from Bergen County Academies. She is interested to pursue a project on musicology.

Claire started a nonprofit organization, whereby the members travel around the state and performs for patients with Alzheimer’s, dementia, depression, and other health issues. Claire has been playing the violin for numerous years and have won several competitions. Currently, she is the concertmaster at my school.

What challenges did she face?

  • Claire has broad ideas for the literature review. However, by the last session, she was able to integrate these diverse aspects into her paper in a convincing manner.

How did our program help her?

  • Claire learnt to read and critique music research article, and also using secondary research to support her paper.
  • Claire completed a high-quality 10-page literature review, that is fit for publishing in a junior research journal. Her mentor has also signed off the “consent to publish” form for Columbia Junior Science Journal.

Matched Professor

The mentor is an Adjunct Assistant Professor from the Department of Music, Columbia University. He earned his Ph.D., MPhil, and MA in Historical Musicology at Columbia University. He specializes in music performance studies, music cognition, and math for the liberal arts.

What I liked most about working with Claire was how she demonstrates promise, skill, and talent beyond her years. She showed outstanding initiative in shaping her topic in new and exciting ways beyond my expectations.
