Maanika Qassem
She is a 12th grade student from Jayshree Periwal International School. She is interested to major in Biochemistry.


Maanika’s primary academic interest is Biochemistry. She has taken Biology and Chemistry classes at school in her International Baccalaureate curriculum (earning the best possible score of 7). She has also written two Biology review papers (one on how radiation impacts plant growth), taken a Neuroscience course on Coursera, and is also currently working on an extended essay on plant enzymatic activity.

Learning objectives

  • To investigate the incident, causes, and treatments availably for children suffering from epilepsy in autism. Specifically, sensory overload and how the sensory sensitivity associate with autism contribute to the server seizures.


What challenges did she face?

  • The most difficult aspect of this project that Maanika encountered was the lack of literature on the subject in question. There were articles on autism and on epilepsy but few that looked at the two combined. She took the initiative to reach out to publishers in India to try to know more.


How did our program help her

  • Maanika managed to deep-dive into topics investigating the incident, causes, and treatments availably for children suffering from epilepsy in autism.
  • Through Maanika’s hard work and with the help of her mentor’s recommendation letter, she is admitted to University of California San Diego, studying molecular biology.


Matched Professor

The mentor is a Lecturer at The George Washington University. He’s also a Senior Scientist at National Institute of Health. He earned his Ph.D. in Medical Science at the University of South Florida. His research focused on elucidating the underlying mechanisms of stroke, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s disease.
