Music Composition Project

Music Composition Project

Program Learning Objective

The Music Composition Project is designed to help students refine their creative and technical skills while developing their unique compositional style. Participants will build a strong foundation in music theory, orchestration, and the use of digital audio workstations (DAWs) to compose across a range of genres. Projects may include composing film or video game scores, creating original songs or symphonic works, or exploring avant-garde and electronic music.

Feel free to reach out and schedule a complimentary consultation with our counselor. Each mentorship program is tailored to match an individual’s level of expertise and research interests.

Program Outline

Week 1:

Review fundamental music theory concepts, such as melody, harmony, and rhythm. Learn techniques for generating musical ideas and organizing them into coherent structures.

Week 2:

Analyze notable compositions across various genres, from classical to contemporary. Select a project focus (e.g., film scoring, electronic music, or orchestral composition) and define its scope.

Week 3:

Craft thematic ideas or motifs for the selected project. Experiment with variations to explore how themes evolve and integrate into larger compositions.

Week 4:

Dive into the principles of orchestration and instrumentation. Use software or traditional methods to arrange musical ideas for specific ensembles or mediums. The mentor will complete a mid-point evaluation to be given to the student.

Week 5:

Master a digital audio workstation (DAW) or composition software like Finale, Sibelius, or Ableton Live. Learn techniques for sequencing, layering, and producing high-quality audio.

Week 6:

Share drafts of compositions with peers and mentors for constructive feedback. Make iterative refinements to improve structure, coherence, and emotional impact.

Week 7:

Finalize the project, focusing on details like dynamics, articulation, and transitions. Prepare a professional score or audio file for presentation.

Week 8:

Present the final composition to mentor. Reflect on the creative process and identify areas for future development.
