Program Learning Objective
The Sociology Research Program is tailored for students who are keen on developing their ability to conduct independent research in sociology. Students will be guided through the process of formulating research questions, collecting data using both qualitative and quantitative techniques, and interpreting sociological phenomena. They will become adept in utilizing methods like surveys, interviews, and content analysis. Topics often explored in this program include social inequality, community dynamics, race and ethnicity, gender studies, and the role of social media in contemporary society.
Feel free to reach out and schedule a complimentary consultation with our counselor. Each mentorship program is tailored to match an individual’s level of expertise and research interests.
Program Outline
Week 1:
Week 2:
The student begins conducting a literature review by searching academic databases such as JSTOR, Google Scholar, and ProQuest. They analyze existing research to understand the gaps in current knowledge. The student will start to narrow their focus, ensuring that their research question is specific, measurable, and addresses a particular gap in the literature.
Week 3:
The student focuses on designing their research plan, selecting appropriate qualitative (e.g., ethnography, interviews) or quantitative (e.g., surveys, experiments) methods based on the refined research question. The student also explores ethical considerations in research.
Week 4:
The student focuses on data collection methods. For qualitative research, they learn how to conduct interviews, focus groups, and participant observation, including how to design interview guides and interact with participants. For quantitative research, the student learns how to design surveys, develop sampling strategies, and ensure their data collection instruments are reliable and valid.
Week 5:
The student learn how to organize and interpret qualitative data using techniques like thematic analysis and coding, identifying key patterns and trends.
Week 6:
With data analysis underway, the student begins drafting their research paper. This week focuses on structuring the paper, including how to present the introduction, literature review, methodology, and preliminary findings. The student learns how to integrate their data analysis into the paper.
Week 7:
The student will focus on enhancing the clarity and coherence of their writing, ensuring each section builds upon the last and that the findings are well supported by evidence. The student receives mentor feedback to help identify areas of improvement, especially in the integration of data and theory.
Week 8:
The student focuses on finalizing the research paper, synthesizing the key findings, and drawing conclusions that address the research question. They work on revising their introduction and conclusion to ensure they provide a clear summary of the study and its implications.
